Food is the best icebreaker and the best way to learn new things. If you want to travel to Peru through your taste buds, here are some unique foods you must try. And when I say unique I mean it.
Anticuchos. Have an open mind, because these are delicious but… it’s cooked cow heart. That’s why I said you should keep an open mind. If you can get past the fact of which animal organ this is, you will be wowed by the flavour. Click here for a recipe
Chicha morada. This drink is made from purple corn with a mixture of a few things like cinnamon, pineapples, apples, etc. I personally do not like this drink, but it is very popular in Peru. The first time I tried it was actually in Canada when a family friend brought it to a house party. Want to try it yourself? Check out the recipe.
Ceviche. This is hands down my favourite dish from Peru. Best of all, it is not too complicated to make. The unique part is how the fish in ceviche is cooked - with lemon. I’ve been having this dish for many years, but the first time I cooked it was at a hostel in Peru. It was time consuming to make, but the result was mouth watering. Try it yourself.
Pisco Sour. Pisco is a South American brandy and when paired with egg whites and lemon, you get a Pisco Sour. It is a really good yummy drink - almost too yummy… Drinking 3 of them within an hour was not my finest moment. Make your own.
Guinea Pig. This dish may have to wait until you are in Peru. BUT this is actually quite a normal dish. If you go to the mountains to see the way the natives live, you will find their homes roaming with guinea pigs. And yes I did try it when I was Cusco.
